DIPloma Project – Youth Cultural and Educational CenterTehran | 1972
This project was my final thesis, presented and accepted with distinction in June 1972. The site is located adjacent to the Harvard School of Management, next to Chamran Highway, opposite Deh Vanak, within the lands of Shahrak-e Gharb, and along the banks of the Evin-Darakeh River.
Believing that everything related to youth should be open and transparent, the design features a structure made of a special transparent double-layer plastic. When needed, colored air can be injected into the space between the two layers to create visual separation between interior and exterior spaces. In pleasant weather, the roofs can be opened to expose parts of the complex to open air. At night, colored lights within the double-layered panels, combined with internal lighting visible from outside, and the movement and activities of the youth, create a unique visual appeal.
The complex includes open and enclosed areas, audio-visual halls, gathering and discussion centers, exhibition spaces, cultural product shops and cafés. The surrounding environment is arranged in terraces designed for leisure, social interaction among youth, cultural and artistic events. The total built area of the complex is 8,000 square meters.
