6-19. Ganjnameh - Strategic Plan | Abbasabad Valley - Hamedan | 2002

The Ganjnameh–Abbasabad Valley, approximately 2.5 km long, stands as one of the most iconic natural and historical landscapes of Hamedan. Its rare combination of ancient inscriptions (dating back to the Achaemenid and Parthian periods), natural waterfalls, lush gardens, and striking granite rock formations makes this valley a unique and invaluable heritage site. The strategic plan developed for this area offers a comprehensive analysis of the valley’s relationship with the city of Hamedan and its surrounding natural and built environments. The plan emphasizes sustainable tourism development while safeguarding the valley’s cultural, historical, and ecological integrity. Key proposals and priorities include: Preserving the valley’s mountainous environment and its inner gardens. Enhancing the environmental quality and landscape around the two main heritage assets (inscriptions and waterfall). Protecting the pristine nature of Mishan Plain and the overlooking mountain slopes. Conserving the region’s unique granite formations as geological heritage. Strongly opposing the construction of a cable car system, due to its harmful impact on the site’s natural and historical value. Implementing safety measures along landslide-prone paths, especially in the Mishan access route. Proposing environmentally sensitive architectural models for small-scale, well-managed tourism facilities. Unfortunately, with the change of provincial leadership, the consultant’s well-grounded recommendations were disregarded. As a result, a cable car station and related infrastructure were constructed directly in front of the two world-class heritage monuments. The surrounding landscape has since been overwhelmed by inappropriate land use: chaotic parking areas, cars, animal rental services, public toilets, intrusive paving, and vendors selling low-quality (mostly imported) goods. This transformation has severely degraded the cultural and visual integrity of t he valley and undermined its global heritage significance. * In Section 8 (The Sustainable Development Approach), additional data from this plan are presented.
