12. Explanation of Selected Terms Used in the Projects

TermsExplanation
ExecutivePreparation of the second-phase design
Nature’s Continuation in the CityRevitalization of river-valleys to facilitate the connection between people, the city, and nature
Remaining Natural GemsThe surviving legacy of natural elements (mountains, valleys, foothill lands, springs, gardens, coasts, etc.)
GardenIn documents, literature, and legal or religious texts, there is no single definition of a garden. In this context, a garden refers to a defined and partly enclosed space containing running water, trees, shrubs, flowers, a central pedestrian path, and often a structure along that axis. (Example: Oil Company Garden Project – Tehran)
Garden–BazaarA marketplace where water and garden elements are integrated along or within the space. (Example: District 12 Project – Tehran)
Garden PathA route lined with water, trees, and vegetation on both sides. (Example: Modarres Highway Project – Tehran)
Garden–RiverA garden created within or along the banks of a river. (Example: Vakilabad Garden Project – Mashhad)
Garden–City A city in which the area of green-space ground cover exceeds that of human-made (built) spaces. (Examples: Darrud and Khoru – in the vicinity of Neyshabur)
Public GardenA garden established by municipalities, the government, or individuals, accessible to the public or specific groups. (Examples: Sardar Garden – Isfahan; National Garden – Mashhad)
Stone GardenA garden typically built on rocky terrain in mountainous areas. (Example: Ferdowsi Garden Project – Tehran)
Core ConceptContent and function
ParkA public green space in Western countries, often designed for open-sun exposure and lacking trees, whereas in Iranian gardens, particularly along main axes, shaded areas under trees are preferred. Therefore, in naming public green spaces, terms such as Bagh (Garden) or Pardis (Paradise) are more appropriate.
Linear PardisA sequence of interconnected gardens arranged along a linear path. (Example: Linear Pardis Project – Arak)
Urban PardisA composition of interconnected gardens, each with distinct yet compatible functions. (Example: Koohsangi Pardis Project – Mashhad)
Mountain PardisA series of linked gardens in a mountainous setting, each adapted to local conditions yet harmonized within the overall ensemble. (Example: Mountain Pardis Project – District 2, Tehran)
Strategic PlanA general and forward-looking master plan. (Example: Section 6 Projects)
Strategic Plan + PrototypesA comprehensive, forward-looking plan accompanied by models suitable for immediate implementation. (Example: Section 6 Projects)
River-ValleyThe natural path of surface water and seasonal floods from the city’s upper elevations. (Example: Valenjak River-Valley Project – Tehran)
